Emergency Services Foundation

COURAGE CAN COME AT A COST

Every day, Victoria's emergency services workers and 100,000 volunteers' step into situations most people spend their lives hoping to avoid.

They attend fatal road accidents, violent incidents, medical emergencies, suicides, natural disasters and major community crises.

They work long hours under pressure, make critical decisions in moments of chaos, and repeatedly witness trauma, grief and human suffering, often while carrying the weight of their own experiences silently in the background.

For many, the impact is not from a single incident, but from the accumulation of trauma over years of service. The emotional toll can affect mental health, relationships, physical wellbeing, family life and long-term quality of life.

Yet despite the risks they face protecting Victorian communities, many emergency services personnel still struggle to seek support early or access preventative wellbeing programs before their mental injury becomes significant.

The Emergency Services Foundation (ESF) exists to change that.

The ESF is a Victorian not-for-profit organisation that supports the mental health and wellbeing of emergency service workers, volunteers and their families.

Established through a partnership of Victoria's emergency management agencies, ESF brings services together to deliver prevention, early intervention, education and recovery programs that strengthen wellbeing across the sector.

ESF works to improve psychological safety, reduce the impacts of trauma and build healthier, more resilient emergency service communities through research, training, peer connection, family support and collaborative initiatives.
